Chennai’s much-awaited annual flower show has opened its doors at Semmozhi Poonga, located on Cathedral Road. This iconic event, inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on January 2, showcases over 30 lakh varieties of flowers and flowering plants sourced from various parts of India. The flower show, which will run until January 19, offers a stunning display of nature’s brilliance, with visitors also able to purchase flowers and plants from the stalls set up for the event.
The flower show runs daily from 10 am to 7 pm, with an entry fee of Rs 200 for adults and Rs 100 for children. The show features an impressive array of flowers, including various types of roses, petunias, marigolds, delphiniums, and begonias. Many of these flowers have been grown in the horticulture gardens of Ooty and Kodaikanal, while others are sourced from Krishnagiri and Hosur. Authorities have ensured that organic methods, such as using neem pesticides and organic manure, are employed to maintain the plants’ health.
Semmozhi Poonga itself, which covers 8 acres, is a favorite destination for Chennai residents and tourists alike. The park, inaugurated by former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi in 2010, is home to more than 800 rare plant species. This year, the flower show features stunning floral displays and unique creations, such as animal and bird forms made entirely from flowers, which are expected to delight children and visitors of all ages.
