Junagarh Fort, an iconic landmark in Bikaner, Rajasthan, was constructed under the reign of Raja Rai Singh, the sixth ruler of Bikaner, who governed from 1571 to 1611 AD. The fort’s construction spanned from 1588 AD to 1593 AD and was meticulously supervised by Karan Chand Junagarh, the Prime Minister of Raja Rai Singh. Unlike most forts in Rajasthan, Junagarh Fort is unique as it is one of the few that is not situated on a hilltop, yet it has remained nearly impenetrable despite numerous attacks.
Formerly known as Chintamani Fort, Junagarh stands proudly on the plains, deeply embedded in the historical and cultural fabric of Rajasthan. The fort complex houses a series of palaces, such as Anup Mahal, Chandra Mahal, and Phool Mahal, each adorned with stunning mirror work and intricate carvings that reflect the grandeur of the bygone era. The fort was originally surrounded by a moat, and its 986-meter-long wall with 37 bastions adds to its formidable presence. Inside the fort, there are 37 palaces and several pavilions, as well as Hindu and Jain temples, all showcasing exquisite red and yellow sandstone carvings typical of traditional Rajasthani architecture.
Junagarh Fort also serves as a repository of history, with an extensive museum housing a diverse collection of artifacts, including ancient manuscripts, weapons, royal costumes, and jewelry. The fort is easily accessible from all parts of Bikaner and can be reached by road, with RSRTC buses connecting it to major cities like Jaisalmer, Udaipur, Ajmer, and Delhi. The nearest airport is in Jodhpur, making air travel a convenient option. The fort is open to visitors daily from 10 am to 4:30 pm, offering a window into the rich heritage and architectural brilliance of Rajasthan.
