Exploring the Enchanting Water Lily Fields of Kollad in Kerala

The serene countryside of Kollad, located just 5 kilometers from Kottayam town, resembles an impressionist painting with its breathtaking display of bright pink water lilies. The Kizhakkupuram paddy field, spanning 200 acres, has naturally transformed into a stunning ‘sea’ of water lilies, attracting numerous tourists. The blooming water lilies have turned this previously unknown area into a major tourist destination, drawing people for photoshoots, scenic enjoyment, and quality family time amidst nature. Local residents are now advocating for better infrastructure to accommodate the influx of visitors, while families and farmers are eager to provide a memorable experience.

The Magic of Water Lilies

The paddy fields fill with water during May and June, causing the water lily seeds buried in the mud to sprout and spread their leaves on the surface. The flowers bloom from July to October, creating a picturesque landscape that attracts visitors. Although the water lilies wither by October, the seeds remain buried in the mud, ready for the next blooming season. The stems of the water lilies can grow up to three meters, and the flowers stand at least a foot above the water surface, boasting three layers of brightly colored petals.

How to Get There

From Kottayam town, take the road towards Boat Jetty Kavala on the Kanjikuzhi – Kollad road.

Turn left at Boat Jetty Kavala and continue to Kollan Kavala junction.

Take another left to the panchayat road and proceed to Thrikkol temple.

The water lily field is located right beside the temple.

Tips for Visiting Kollad

The best time to view the water lilies is from 6:30 am to 7:30 am, as the flowers begin to droop when the sun rises.

Carry drinking water and snacks since there are limited shops in the village.

Avoid littering the area with plastic bottles or other waste materials to help preserve the natural beauty.
