Shimla, the picturesque capital of Himachal Pradesh, is set to enhance its appeal as a global tourist destination with the construction of the world’s second-largest ropeway. Scheduled to begin on March 1, 2025, this ambitious project aims to further elevate Shimla’s status as a sought-after location for travelers.
Key Details of the Ropeway Project
Project Overview: The new ropeway will span 13.79 kilometers and will initially have the capacity to transport 2,000 passengers per hour, with an anticipated increase to 6,000 passengers per hour by 2059. The project is designed to alleviate congestion in Shimla and its surrounding areas.
Funding and Approval: The project is allocated Rs 1,734.40 crore, with 80% of the funding provided by the New Development Bank and the remaining 20% covered by the Himachal Pradesh state government. The feasibility study was completed in June, and clearance was granted in July. The formal approval from the bank’s director board is expected in December 2024.
Route and Stations: The ropeway will feature three routes: Monal Line, Deodar Line, and Apple Line. It will include 13 boarding stations at key locations such as Taradevi, Judicial Complex, and Railway Station, among others. This extensive network will make the ropeway highly accessible and convenient for both residents and tourists.
Employment Impact: The project is anticipated to create direct employment for around 250 individuals and provide indirect employment to approximately 20,000 people.
Ticket Pricing: Ticket fares will be differentiated for residents and tourists, with rates set by the state government.
