The Idukki and Cheruthoni dams will be open to visitors during the Onam holiday season, offering a rare opportunity to explore these iconic structures. The Kerala government has granted permission for the public to visit the dams for a period of up to three months, with specific safety guidelines in place to ensure that ongoing maintenance work is not disrupted. Minister Roshy Augustine announced that the decision came after a written request was submitted to Minister K Krishnankutty.
Visitors can enter the dams between 9:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day, except Wednesdays, when entry is restricted to allow for maintenance activities. During their visit, guests will be taken around in buggy cars for a guided tour, adding a unique experience to the visit. Entry tickets are priced at Rs 100 for children and Rs 150 for adults, with the buggy car ride included in the fee.
However, only a limited number of visitors—up to 820 people—will be allowed daily, ensuring a controlled and safe environment for both visitors and workers. The route to the dams involves traveling via the Cheruthoni–Vellappara road, with the same route required for departure. This initiative allows visitors to experience one of Kerala’s most famous landmarks while adhering to safety measures.
