Idukki, one of Kerala’s most popular tourist destinations, is currently experiencing an unprecedented surge in visitors. With schools closed for the summer, the district has welcomed more than 2 lakh tourists between April 5 and 20. Family vacations dominate the influx, and peak numbers were recorded on Good Friday, with 27,269 people visiting. Easter and the day before Vishu also saw impressive numbers, with 24,000 and 23,000 visitors, respectively.
Among the top attractions in Idukki are Vagamon Adventure Park, which has already attracted 74,949 tourists as of April 20, and Vagamon Hills, with 62,536 visitors. Other favorites include the Munnar Botanical Garden (35,969 visitors), Ramakkalmedu (18,172), and several beautiful spots such as Panchalimedu, Idukki Hill View Park, and Thommankuthu.
In anticipation of the high tourist traffic, Idukki’s District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) has implemented several safety measures. Due to the threat of thunder and lightning in certain areas, restrictions are placed on afternoon visits and off-roading activities. The police are also enforcing strict parking and traffic management to maintain order, with regular checks to prevent crimes such as drug-related offenses. These proactive measures ensure a safer and more enjoyable experience for tourists visiting the district.
