In a significant move aimed at enhancing passenger safety and managing crowds effectively, Indian Railways has announced new rules restricting platform access to only those with confirmed tickets at 60 major railway stations across the country. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve security, streamline station operations, and prevent overcrowding. Some of the key stations affected by this change include Chennai Central, Bengaluru City, Howrah Junction, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, and New Delhi Railway Station.
Under the new regulations, passengers on the waiting list and those without tickets will be required to wait in designated areas outside the stations. To enhance monitoring, additional surveillance cameras will be installed, with live feeds directed to war rooms for real-time observation. Another critical measure being introduced is the limitation of ticket sales based on station capacity and train availability, ensuring a more structured and safer travel experience.
Other Key Measures Implemented
Alongside platform access restrictions, Indian Railways is rolling out several additional security and operational upgrades, including:
- Issuance of new ID cards for railway staff and service personnel to enhance authentication.
- Introduction of standardized, easily identifiable uniforms for railway employees to assist passengers in emergencies.
- Sealing of unauthorized entry points to prevent unauthorized access to platforms and station premises.
- Construction of new foot over bridges in two standard designs—one 12 meters (40 feet) wide and another 6 meters (20 feet) wide—to improve passenger movement and reduce congestion.
- Appointment of senior officials as station directors at key stations, empowering them to make immediate operational and financial decisions.
- Deployment of next-generation digital communication devices for real-time coordination between railway personnel and security teams.
These measures collectively aim to create a more secure and efficient railway experience, reducing chaos at stations and ensuring smoother operations. The implementation of these new rules signifies Indian Railways’ commitment to modernizing infrastructure while prioritizing passenger safety and convenience.
