The recent accident at Kottappara View Point in Kerala’s Idukki district has once again highlighted the pressing need for better safety infrastructure at lesser-known tourist spots. A young man named Samson George from Vannappuram miraculously survived after falling nearly 70 feet during a trek at the site. Thanks to the soft terrain caused by recent rainfall and the swift action of fire and rescue personnel, he was pulled to safety. However, this incident has reignited concerns about the lack of basic protective measures in the area.
Often described as the ‘Meesappulimala of Thodupuzha’, Kottappara is perched in Vannappuram Panchayat and offers breathtaking views, especially during sunrise and sunset. It is part of the Kaliyar Forest Range and features steep rocky cliffs, some dropping over 100 feet. According to Panchayat President Biju M.A., the spot has become a popular hangout for adventure-seeking youth who trek, camp, or park their vehicles overnight to enjoy the cloud-covered landscape. However, the area lacks essential safety features such as railings, signage, and proper trekking guidance.
Biju also noted that the panchayat had formally approached the forest department two years ago with a proposal to manage and develop the site for tourism with adequate safety measures, but no response was received. A similar fatal fall had occurred here in 2022, emphasizing the urgency for action.
Biju added that other emerging attractions in the region, like Aanachadikuthu, Kattadikkadavu, and Meenulinjan Para, also face similar risks due to unregulated access and absent safety protocols.
