The Maldives is making a concerted effort to attract Indian tourists back to the country through a series of roadshows titled ‘Welcome India.’ This initiative comes in the wake of a diplomatic dispute earlier this year that led to a significant drop in Indian visitors to the idyllic beach destination.
Organized by the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), in collaboration with the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) and the National Hotels and Guesthouse Association of Maldives (NHGAM), the roadshows aimed to rekindle interest among Indian travelers. Key figures, including Maldivian Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal and the President’s tourism development advisor Muhammad Khaleel, participated in the events, which took place in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru from July 30 to August 3.
The roadshows brought together 24 major players in the travel and tourism sector, focusing on fostering business-to-business (B2B) relationships and collaborative efforts within the Indian market. The events highlighted the Maldives’ pristine beaches, luxurious resorts, and rich cultural heritage, with the goal of enticing Indian tourists to revisit.
The Maldives saw 65,000 Indian visitors in the first half of 2024, indicating a steady flow of tourists despite previous diplomatic tensions. The roadshows are expected to bolster this trend and attract more Indian travelers. Participants at the roadshows had the chance to win exciting prizes sponsored by prominent resorts and hospitality brands such as Kandima Maldives, Nova Maldives, Arena Beach Hotels, and Alila Kothaifaru Maldives.
The boycott of Maldives by Indian tourists was sparked by derogatory comments from Maldivian officials about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This diplomatic fallout severely impacted the Maldives’ tourism sector, a crucial component of its economy. In response, the Maldivian government has been working to mend relations with India. President Mohamed Muizzu publicly expressed gratitude to both India and China for their financial support, acknowledging India’s contribution of a Rs 400 crore financial package during his speech on July 27, marking the 59th anniversary of Maldives’ independence.
Indian tourists made up 6.2% of all visitors to the Maldives in June 2024. Popular destinations in the Maldives include Male, Addu Atoll, Maafushi Island, and Veligandu Island, known for their stunning beaches and thrilling activities such as deep-sea diving and snorkeling.
