The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has introduced updated baggage policies, effective May 2, 2024, aimed at streamlining security procedures and managing increased passenger traffic at airports. These changes, adopted by major Indian airlines like Air India and Indigo, are expected to enhance the efficiency of screening processes and reduce congestion at terminals.
Key Highlights of the Revised Rules
One Cabin Bag Per Passenger:
Passengers are now limited to one cabin bag or handbag per person. Economy class travelers can carry a maximum of 7 kilograms, while business and first-class passengers can carry up to 10 kilograms as hand luggage. All additional luggage must be checked in.
Cabin Bag Dimensions:
The allowed dimensions for cabin bags are capped at 55 cm (height) x 40 cm (length) x 20 cm (width). This ensures easier handling during security screenings.
Charges for Excess Weight:
Cabin baggage exceeding the specified weight limit will incur additional charges.
Exemption for Pre-Booked Tickets:
Passengers with tickets booked before May 2, 2024, can carry up to 8 kilograms on domestic flights, 10 kilograms in premium economy, and 12 kilograms in business class.
Changes in Airline Policies
Air India, for instance, has already implemented stricter baggage policies by reducing complimentary checked baggage limits. Economy passengers now have a 15-kilogram limit, down from 20 kilograms, aligning with these new regulations.
Why These Rules Were Introduced
With the surge in air travel and busier airports, the BCAS and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) have taken steps to improve passenger flow and reduce delays. These measures aim to enhance the travel experience by minimizing security bottlenecks.
