For cycling enthusiasts, covering 100 miles is more than just a physical feat—it’s an emotional and spiritual journey. Some describe it as flying without wings, while others see it as a path to freedom, self-discovery, and connection with nature. This year, the annual Tour of Thekkady, organized by the Kottayam KEG Bikers, is set to take place on March 8, drawing nearly 200 riders from across India and abroad.
The 160 km ride is considered one of India’s premier Gran Fondo cycling events, blending competitive racing with an immersive touring experience. Open to participants above 18 years, the event features different race categories, including the team race, men-elite race, men’s master’s race, and women’s race. The tour will kick off from Nagampadam in Kottayam at 5 AM, passing through Ettumanoor, Pala, Neeloor, Muttam, Kulamavu, Cheruthoni, Kattappana, Puliyanmala, Anakkara, and culminating in Thekkady.
A Journey Through Nature’s Finest Landscapes
According to KEG Bikers’ President, Kiran C Kurian, cycling events of this scale are rare in India. “Though Tour of Thekkady is a race, its essence lies in the breathtaking landscapes riders traverse,” he says. Ride Director James KV elaborates on the scenic route, which takes cyclists through Kerala’s picturesque countryside. Riders will pass through rubber plantations in Ettumanoor and Pala, witness the tranquil beauty of Malankara Reservoir in Muttam, and climb towards the stunning Nadukani Viewpoint in Idukki.
The route further leads to the historic Moolamattom powerhouse, the serene tourist haven of Ilaveezhapoonchira, and a forested stretch in the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary. Cyclists will also pedal past the Kulamavu Dam, Idukki Reservoir, and Cheruthoni Dam before reaching Kalvari Mount Viewpoint. As they near Thekkady, the fragrant cardamom plantations of Kattappana and Puliyanmala, along with the lush tea estates of Kumily, provide a refreshing visual treat. A notable stop along the way is the iconic volleyball court from the Malayalam movie Maheshinte Prathikaram, adding a touch of cinematic nostalgia to the journey.
Support and Facilities for Cyclists
To enhance the experience, the organizers are offering special facilities, including a free drop bag service for participants who wish to change outfits upon reaching Thekkady. Cyclists can also opt for a paid cycle drop service to safely transport their bikes back to Kottayam after the event. These services can be availed by registering in advance.
