Reliance Jio Platforms Limited has entered into a strategic partnership with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to introduce Starlink’s satellite-based broadband services to Indian consumers. This agreement is contingent upon regulatory approvals for SpaceX to operate Starlink in India. The announcement follows a similar pact between SpaceX and Bharti Airtel, highlighting the growing demand for satellite internet solutions in the country.
Boosting Connectivity Across India
Jio’s collaboration with SpaceX aims to enhance broadband coverage, particularly in remote and rural areas, using Starlink’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network. By integrating Starlink’s services into Jio’s broadband infrastructure, the company intends to improve internet accessibility for businesses, enterprises, and underserved communities.
Mathew Oommen, Group CEO of Reliance Jio, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating that the agreement reinforces Jio’s commitment to seamless, high-speed connectivity in the AI-driven digital era. He added that the availability of Starlink solutions through Jio’s retail stores and online platforms will significantly broaden broadband reach.
Retail and Customer Support Integration
As part of the collaboration, Jio will offer Starlink hardware through its retail network and will also establish a customer service mechanism to assist with installation and activation. This approach ensures a smooth and efficient adoption of satellite-based broadband solutions for Indian consumers.
Complementing JioAirFiber and JioFiber
Jio stated that Starlink’s high-speed internet will serve as a complementary service to its existing JioAirFiber and JioFiber networks, allowing users in challenging locations to access reliable connectivity in a quick and cost-effective manner.
Government Approval and Future Prospects
Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO of SpaceX, expressed optimism about the collaboration, applauding Jio’s efforts to advance India’s connectivity landscape. She emphasized SpaceX’s eagerness to work with Jio and secure government approval to officially launch Starlink services in India.
Additionally, both companies are exploring further areas of cooperation to leverage their existing infrastructure and accelerate India’s digital transformation.
