Saudi Arabia has introduced new visa options to facilitate the pilgrimage experience for citizens of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. As part of its Vision 2030 initiative, the Kingdom has implemented a simplified visa process, making it easier for travellers from GCC nations to perform Umrah in Mecca. In addition to the traditional Umrah visa, pilgrims can now enter the country using transit and tourist visas, providing them with greater flexibility in their travel plans.
Transit Visa: A Convenient Option for Pilgrims
One of the newly launched visa options is the transit visa, which allows travellers to stay in Saudi Arabia for up to 96 hours. This visa is particularly beneficial for air travellers with layovers in the country, as it permits them to perform Umrah during their stopover. To apply for this visa, passengers must book their tickets with Saudi-based airlines and submit an online application through the airline’s official portal. Upon approval, an electronic visa will be issued, enabling pilgrims to visit significant religious sites such as Mecca and Medina during their stay.
Tourist Visa for Religious and Cultural Exploration
Another option available for GCC citizens is the tourist visa, which allows them to explore Saudi Arabia’s vast historical and cultural heritage while undertaking their pilgrimage. Unlike the transit visa, which is limited to four days, the tourist visa provides extended stay options and can be applied for via official Saudi Arabian government platforms. This initiative aims to boost religious tourism by offering a more immersive experience beyond the Umrah pilgrimage.
Important Guidelines for Umrah Visa Holders
Pilgrims arriving in Saudi Arabia on an Umrah visa are required to leave the country before April 29, regardless of the standard three-month validity period. This regulation is implemented annually in preparation for the peak Umrah season, ensuring smooth visa management for all pilgrims.
With these new visa policies, Saudi Arabia continues to enhance accessibility for GCC nationals, making it more convenient and cost-effective to perform Umrah.
