Thiruvananthapuram: The AI-enabled traffic monitoring cameras in Kerala, which were temporarily non-functional, are now back in action. With funds released to Keltron, the cameras have resumed capturing traffic violations such as seatbelt neglect, helmet absences, and yellow line crossings. Motorists are being notified via SMS about fines, with a stern warning that unpaid penalties will be escalated to court after seven days.
The temporary suspension had led to a surge in violations, as many motorists disregarded traffic rules. However, the resumption of the system caught residents off guard as SMS notifications started rolling out last week. Complaints have since emerged, with drivers being fined for actions like stopping on zebra crossings or passing through intersections during a yellow light.
Santhosh, a resident of Pongumoodu, expressed frustration after receiving fines totaling ₹9,000 for signal and yellow line violations at Pattam Junction. Delayed notifications further compound the issue, with some motorists discovering that the seven-day payment window had already expired when attempting to settle their dues.
Criticism has also been directed at the state of road infrastructure. Poor road markings, malfunctioning signals, and disruptions caused by Smart City construction projects have added to the confusion for drivers. Many argue that the penalties are unfair given the lack of clear road guidance and the ongoing infrastructural issues.
While the AI cameras aim to ensure safer roads, public opinion remains divided, with calls for enhanced infrastructure to accompany stricter enforcement measures.
