The much-anticipated arrival of Onam is heralded by Atham today, signaling the start of ten days filled with joy, tradition, and floral decorations for Malayalees worldwide. Over the next several days, Malayalee households will be adorned with flowers as the people prepare for Thiruvonam, the grand celebration of new clothes, feasts, and traditional games. Onam is more than just a festive occasion; it serves as a cultural bridge connecting the younger generation to the customs and practices of the past. Though flowers like Mukutti, Kakapoo, and Thumbapoo, which were once commonly found in the wild, are now rare, the tradition of creating flower beds remains strong, symbolizing the unity and love of the people. Artistic designs such as Kathakali masks and Vallamkali motifs will grace the intricate floral carpets in the days to come. Onam celebrations extend from Atham to Chatayam, culminating in ten days of togetherness and joy for Malayalees everywhere.
In Thripunithura, the historic Attachamaya procession will take place today, marking the formal start of the Onam festivities. Assembly Speaker AM Shamseer is set to inaugurate the event, while Minister P Rajeev will hoist the national flag at 9 AM at the Tripunithura Boys High School grounds. This year’s Attachamaya procession, held in the wake of the Wayanad disaster, will be conducted without grand celebrations. Atham Nagar will also host various public programs starting today. Traffic restrictions have been implemented in Thripunithura from 7 AM to 4 PM to accommodate the procession.
