WELLINGTON: Globally acclaimed New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known for his iconic role in the blockbuster Jurassic Park and critically praised films like The Piano, has passed away at the age of 78. His family confirmed the news through a statement on his official social media pages, describing his death in Sydney, Australia, as sudden and unexpected. Although Neill had shared in 2023 that he was being treated for a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, his family explicitly noted that he remained cancer-free at the time of his passing, and no specific cause of death was provided.
Neill was widely celebrated as a smooth, elegant, and incredibly versatile actor whose career effortlessly transitioned from intimate art-house cinema to massive Hollywood blockbusters. He became a household name worldwide in 1993 for his definitive portrayal of the gruff yet heroic paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi masterpiece Jurassic Park, a role he successfully reprised in multiple installments of the franchise over the decades. He was part of a legendary generation of talent who achieved international stardom during the explosion of Australian cinema in the late 1970s and 1980s.
Beyond fighting prehistoric predators on screen, Neill delivered haunting and powerful performances in classics such as Jane Campion’s Oscar-winning film The Piano. In recent years, he also won over a whole new generation of fans with his television work, notably playing the ruthless Chief Inspector Chester Campbell in the hit British crime drama Peaky Blinders. Outside of Hollywood, he was deeply passionate about winemaking and owned an organic vineyard in New Zealand. Film industries and fans across the globe have united in mourning the loss of a cinematic giant who left an indelible mark on world cinema.
