Malappuram: MLA P V Anvar has been remanded to judicial custody following his arrest on Sunday night in connection with the vandalism of the Nilambur Forest Office. He, along with Democratic Movement of Kerala (DMK) workers Sudheer Punnappala, Mustafa Pattambi, Shaukkath Panamaram, and Kunjimuhammad, was sent to the Tavanur Sub Jail after undergoing a medical examination. The arrest occurred at his Othai residence at around 9 pm amidst a heavy police presence.
Speaking to the media, Anvar alleged that his arrest was politically motivated and orchestrated by the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government under pressure from the RSS. He specifically accused political secretary P Sasi and ADGP Ajith Kumar of involvement, claiming that the Chief Minister has succumbed to external influences. Anvar criticized the manner of his arrest, comparing the police operation to that of apprehending notorious criminals.
The case pertains to an attack on the Nilambur Forest Office after the death of a youth in a wild elephant attack. Anvar and his supporters are accused of storming the office and causing extensive damage. He faces charges under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act, a non-bailable offense.
Senior Congress leaders K Sudhakaran and Ramesh Chennithala condemned the arrest as an attempt to silence dissent against the government. While Anvar expressed readiness to remain in custody if it benefits high-range residents, he announced plans to apply for bail, asserting his willingness to cooperate with the investigation.
