In a recent interview, filmmaker-turned-actor Basil Joseph shared insights into the most challenging shot he has ever directed. Reflecting on the opening scene of his 2017 film Godha, Basil explained how it required a precise setup, with actors holding still in a mannequin-like fashion to portray an old-fashioned wrestling scene. Basil described how this shot, orchestrated with cinematographer Vishnu on a 110-foot crane, was one of the toughest of his career. “We used an industrial crane for this shot, and if even one actor moved slightly, we’d have to redo the whole scene,” he shared, emphasizing the pressure for absolute stillness in each take. After numerous attempts, they finally captured the moment just as daylight broke.
Following his success with Godha, Basil is now set to star alongside Nazriya Nazim in the much-anticipated Malayalam film Sookshmadarshini, directed by MC and produced by Sameer Tahir, Shaiju Khalid, and AV Anoop. This film marks Nazriya’s return to Malayalam cinema, and the project promises a strong cast, including Deepak Parambol, Sidharth Bharathan, and Kottayam Ramesh. Sookshmadarshini boasts an experienced crew, with cinematography by Sharan Velayudhan, editing by Chaman Chacko, and music by Christo Xavier, bringing together talents under the banners of Happy Hours Entertainment and AVA Productions.
