The Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has disclosed that the final re-edited version of Empuraan includes 24 cuts, surpassing the earlier reports of 17 modifications. The latest certification highlights several significant changes, including altering the villain’s name from Balraj Bajrangi to Baldev, removing Central Minister Suresh Gopi’s name from the film’s thank-you credits, and muting references to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Additionally, a scene featuring a vehicle passing through a background with religious symbols has been completely removed. Several dialogues exchanged between the main antagonist and another character have also been modified. Another notable cut is a violent scene involving the assault of a woman, which was omitted from the final version.
According to the CBFC, these deletions were not enforced by the board but were made voluntarily by the filmmakers after receiving the initial certification.
Addressing the ongoing debate, producer Antony Perumbavoor clarified that the changes were not made due to political pressure but rather as a responsible decision by the filmmaking team. “We did not make these edits out of fear. As filmmakers, we are part of society and do not wish to create content that offends people. Neither Mohanlal, Prithviraj, nor I believe in making films that could unintentionally hurt sentiments. If any content in the film caused unintended harm, it is our duty to take responsibility and address it,” Antony stated.
He further emphasized that actors, directors, and producers have a moral obligation to ensure their films are well-received by audiences while maintaining artistic integrity. Despite the controversy, Empuraan remains one of the most anticipated releases, and the revised version is expected to hit theaters soon.
