Meena Ganesh, an extraordinary talent in Malayalam cinema, passed away at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy cherished by countless fans. Meena’s health had been a concern for many years, and she often expressed gratitude to the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) for their unwavering support. Despite receiving love and care from her children, Meena revealed that she struggled to find the will to live after the passing of her husband, Ganesh. She declined numerous acting opportunities in her later years due to her declining health.
In an interview, Meena reminisced about her husband’s close friendship with the late actor Thilakan. They worked together for three years at Geetha Theatre in Changanassery, and Meena had the honor of acting in Thilakan’s award-winning play, Fasah. She fondly remembered his mentorship, including his constructive criticisms during rehearsals.
Meena’s personal life was marked by challenges. Her relationship with Ganesh, an actor-theatre director, faced significant opposition from her family. “We had a controversial marriage,” Meena recalled. Despite societal judgments against actors at the time, the couple married in 1971 and moved to Shoranur, where they built a life together. They raised two children during their 39 years of marriage, which Meena described as a deeply fulfilling partnership.
Ganesh’s sudden death 15 years ago left Meena heartbroken. She shared how his loss turned her life upside down, recounting their close bond and shared moments. Meena also spoke about the kindness of actor Mani, who supported her during difficult times. His untimely death added to her sorrow, as she cherished his friendship and generosity.
