Thiruvananthapuram: Neyyattinkara Komalam, an early pioneer of Malayalam cinema and the first heroine of legendary actor Prem Nazir, passed away at the age of 98. Komalam, whose real name was Komala Menon, made her mark in 1952 when she starred alongside Prem Nazir in the film Marumakal. Three years later, she played a significant role in Newspaper Boy, the first neorealistic film in Malayalam cinema, directed by P Ramadas. Despite her early contributions to the industry, she eventually faded into obscurity, similar to other forgotten heroines of that era like P K Rosy and M K Kamalam.
Born to Pankajaksha Menon and Kunjiamma of Ravimandiram, Komalam belonged to a distinguished family in Vazhuthur. Her husband, M Chandrasekhara Menon, predeceased her. Komalam’s funeral is scheduled to take place at her family home.
Although her filmography wasn’t extensive, she played important roles in notable films such as Vanamala, Aathmashanthi, and Sandehi, with each performance contributing to her status as a distinguished early actress in Malayalam cinema. Despite her talent, much like many other actresses of her time, Neyyattinkara Komalam did not receive the recognition she deserved. Her passing marks the end of an era, as she was one of the last surviving actresses from the early days of Malayalam cinema, having left behind a lasting legacy in the memories of cinephiles.
