Set against the backdrop of a serene mountain village, ‘Am Ah’ opens with promise. The quaint setting, where freshly tarred roads are only a year old, introduces Stephen, a supervisor overseeing roadwork. Played by Dileesh Pothan, Stephen’s journey through the village unravels layers of mystery beneath its idyllic exterior. Meanwhile, Jaffer Idukki takes on the role of a local ward member, adding a slice of village life to the narrative.
Director Thomas K Sebastian builds a compelling setup, skillfully capturing the village’s charm and intrigue through Anish Lal R S’s breathtaking cinematography. The lush greenery and vibrant landscapes provide a visually immersive experience. However, as the film delves deeper into its storyline, the narrative begins to falter.
The initial suspense transitions into a weaker second half, where the unraveling mystery loses its grip. While actors like Devadarshini as Amminiyamma deliver commendable performances, the lack of depth in character development hinders emotional engagement. Many characters introduced early in the story seem to lack purpose, leaving audiences questioning their relevance.
Unlike similar films such as Ela Veezha Poonchira, where nature becomes a character in itself, the scenic backdrop in ‘Am Ah’ feels underutilized. The trailer promises ominous suspense, but the film takes a different trajectory, leaving viewers with unmet expectations.
Despite its narrative shortcomings, the film’s music by Gopi Sunder complements its tone, offering a soothing accompaniment to the visuals. ‘Am Ah’ showcases immense potential with its stellar visuals and emotional undertones but lacks the coherence and depth needed to make a lasting impact. For fans of Kerala’s natural beauty and light mysteries, this film might still offer a worthwhile experience.
