Lucky Baskhar, directed by Venky Atluri, brings a fresh take on the world of finance and stock market scams to Indian cinema. Known for his romantic comedies, Atluri steps into new territory with this con drama starring Dulquer Salmaan. Rather than diving into dark themes, Lucky Baskhar presents financial fraud with a light, engaging touch, balancing humor and charm to keep the story lively. Atluri draws on his experience with comedies to bring a unique pacing to the film, reminiscent of The Wolf of Wall Street, but with a distinctly Indian flavor.
Set in 1980s Mumbai, the film’s protagonist, Baskhar (played by Dulquer), is a low-level cashier at Magadha Bank struggling to make ends meet for his family. His modest income leaves him and his family — his wife, Sumathi (Meenakshi Chowdhury), and their son — facing hardships and social stigma. Desperate to improve his family’s situation, Baskhar finds himself drawn into the world of money laundering, leading him down a path of stock market schemes and scams. Much like the iconic Rocky Bhai from KGF, Baskhar’s journey is fueled by a desire to provide a better life for his loved ones, especially after reaching his lowest point.
Dulquer Salmaan delivers a stellar performance, embodying Baskhar with ease and capturing his character’s charm and resilience. His portrayal subtly evokes traces of Frank Abagnale from Catch Me If You Can, adding depth to the role. While Meenakshi’s role as Sumathi is smaller, she effectively portrays a grounded, supportive wife, bringing authenticity to her character. Supporting cast members, including Surya Srinivas, Kishore Raju Vasistha, and Ramki, add to the film’s strong ensemble, each contributing to its realism and energy.
G V Prakash Kumar’s background score complements the film’s tone perfectly, and Nimish Ravi’s cinematography adds a vibrant visual quality. While some banking jargon may be confusing for viewers and certain comedic scenes lack logic, these minor flaws are overshadowed by the film’s clever writing and fast-paced screenplay.
