Gautham Vasudev Menon (GVM), known for his grounded yet commercial storytelling, takes a detour into a light-hearted mystery thriller with Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse. Starring Mammootty as a private detective, the film offers a refreshing break from his usual intense investigation thrillers. Unlike his roles in Kannur Squad or the iconic CBI series, Mammootty’s Dominic is not chasing dangerous criminals but is instead tasked with finding the owner of a misplaced purse. This simple premise sets the tone for an engaging narrative.
The story begins when Dominic’s house owner and confidant, played by Viji Venkatesh, entrusts him with the seemingly trivial task. The first half leans heavily on light moments and character interactions, with the investigation gaining momentum only in the second half. The climactic sequences, however, deliver the excitement of a classic investigation thriller, providing a satisfying conclusion.
GVM dedicates parts of the film to celebrating Mammootty as an actor, occasionally slowing the narrative pace. Despite this, Mammootty’s performance shines, and his chemistry with Viji Venkatesh and Gokul Suresh adds charm. Sushmitha Bhatt stands out with her captivating presence. The film’s music, composed by Darbuka Siva, enhances the storytelling, a hallmark of GVM’s work.
While Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse may not be groundbreaking, it is undeniably entertaining, offering a unique mix of fun and intrigue.
