Some filmmakers effortlessly jump across genres, while others master a particular style and consistently deliver. Jithu Madhavan, known for back-to-back hits like Romancham and Aavesham, belongs to the latter category. His latest script, Painkili, directed by actor-turned-filmmaker Sreejith Babu, follows a young man, Suku, whose life takes an unexpected turn after a trip to Coimbatore. Set in a rustic village backdrop, the film blends humor with situational challenges, making for a loud yet engaging watch.
Like Aavesham, Painkili thrives on exaggerated characters who keep getting entangled in chaotic situations. However, unlike Jithu’s previous works, this film leans more toward a family-oriented setting rather than celebrating deep friendships. Suku, played by Sajin Gopu, runs a small shop with his sidekick, portrayed by Roshan Shahnavas. Suku is an eccentric personality, often breaking into spontaneous songs or posting peculiar, half-baked literature on Facebook.
The film heavily relies on situational comedy, sometimes to the detriment of its narrative flow. The screenplay seems overly focused on piling obstacles onto Suku’s path, creating one mishap after another without fully fleshing out the supporting characters or their roles in his life. Despite this, director Sreejith Babu ensures a steady dose of humor, albeit in an over-the-top manner.
Performance-wise, Sajin Gopu carries the film effortlessly, making his transition from a beloved side character in Aavesham to a lead role appear seamless. His portrayal is dynamic and entertaining, making him the heart of Painkili. Anaswara Rajan, who previously impressed audiences with her performances in Neru and Rekhachithram, struggles slightly with the loudness required for her role, making her performance feel somewhat out of place. The film’s energy is further elevated by Justin Varghese’s vibrant music, which complements the lively setting.
Overall, Painkili might not reach the cult status of Aavesham, but if you enjoy quirky, exaggerated humor and situational chaos, this village drama could be a fun watch.
