Director Vignesh Shivan has deactivated his X account (formerly Twitter) amidst escalating controversies surrounding the streaming documentary Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale. This decision follows harsh criticism from social media users after his appearance at a roundtable discussion on pan-Indian films. Critics argued that his previous film, Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal, and his upcoming project, Love Insurance Kompany, do not fit the pan-Indian genre. Despite the backlash, Vignesh has not issued any public statements about deactivating his X account. However, his Instagram profile remains active, where he continues to share updates without addressing the ongoing controversy.
The situation has been further intensified by a legal conflict involving Nayanthara and Tamil actor Dhanush. Dhanush recently sent a legal notice objecting to the use of certain clips from his film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in Nayanthara’s documentary without proper authorization. In response, Nayanthara published a strongly-worded statement on Instagram, criticizing Dhanush’s actions and highlighting her struggles as a self-made actress in the film industry.
Nayanthara revealed that the documentary had to be re-edited after two years of waiting for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Dhanush, who denied permission for the use of songs and visuals from his film. Despite this hurdle, the team decided to move forward with a revised version of the documentary. The incident has sparked significant debate in the film fraternity, drawing attention to the challenges faced by filmmakers and artists in balancing creative freedom with legal constraints.
