After Tesla’s anticipated entry into India was delayed, state governments remain ambitious. An Economic Times report reveals that several Tesla component suppliers are scouting for locations to begin or expand operations in India, despite Tesla’s uncertain local production plans. Gujarat and Tamil Nadu are particularly proactive, aiming to create a robust supply chain to attract Tesla.
Tesla Component Suppliers Eyeing Indian Manufacturing Sites
Sources report that three Tesla suppliers recently visited Gujarat to explore potential sites. These suppliers cater to multiple automotive companies and show keen interest in Gujarat. Additionally, two European suppliers are considering expanding in Tamil Nadu, a state known for its automotive and electronics manufacturing capabilities. Among them, a European metal component manufacturer plans to enlarge operations, and a German manufacturer with a Pune joint venture aims to produce high-performance rubber parts under their parent company’s name.
States’ Strategies to Attract Tesla
Tamil Nadu leverages its strong electronics manufacturing ecosystem to attract Tesla and other EV manufacturers, while Gujarat aggressively woos Tesla’s suppliers. Tesla’s complex supply chain relies on multiple Tier-I and Tier-II suppliers worldwide, and a local supply system can speed up production and reduce costs.
India as a Strategic Supply Hub for Tesla
Industry experts highlight India’s strategic position as global manufacturers shift away from China. Ashwin Amberkar, an automotive analyst at Canalys, notes that decreased dependency on China makes India a reliable partner. If Tesla enters the Indian market, it can utilize its global supply chain partners based in India to lower production costs, manage supply chain risks, and comply with local sourcing regulations.
