In November 2024, India witnessed a remarkable 30.2% growth in two-wheeler exports, with a total of 3,62,157 units shipped abroad, compared to 2,78,214 units during the same period in 2023. This increase is primarily driven by a 33.1% surge in motorcycle exports, reaching 3,16,425 units, and a steady 11.3% growth in scooter exports, which stood at 44,964 units. These numbers reflect the growing global demand for Indian-made two-wheelers, especially motorcycles.
Despite the strong export performance, domestic two-wheeler sales showed a slight decline of 1.1%, totaling 16,04,749 units in November 2024 compared to 16,23,399 units in the previous year. However, the domestic scooter market showed positive growth, with sales increasing by 11.7% to reach 5,68,580 units. On the other hand, motorcycle sales saw a decline of 7.5%, totaling 9,90,246 units.
On a positive note, India’s overall two-wheeler production rose by 8.8% in November 2024, reaching 19,78,009 units. Scooter production jumped by 13.9%, totaling 6,18,170 units, while motorcycle production grew by 6.4%, with 13,12,717 units produced. This increase in production is indicative of the industry’s ability to meet both domestic and international demand, despite challenges in the local market.
This mixed performance highlights the dynamic nature of the two-wheeler industry in India. While exports continue to grow at a strong pace, driven by global demand, domestic sales face challenges, particularly in the motorcycle segment. However, the rise in scooter sales and the overall production increase point to a positive outlook for the industry. As manufacturers adapt to evolving consumer preferences and expand their export markets, the industry is poised to maintain its position as a key player in the global two-wheeler market while working to address domestic market fluctuations.
