Nationwide Bank Strike in February: Four Days of Banking Disruptions Loom

Public Sector Bank Strike on February 24-25; Key Demands Include Five-Day Workweek and Policy Reforms

Public sector banks across India are bracing for significant disruptions as a two-day nationwide strike has been announced for February 24 and 25. Organized by the All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC), the strike seeks to address long-standing demands, including the introduction of a five-day workweek, improved staffing levels, and critical policy reforms.

The strike coincides with a weekend of holidays—February 22 (fourth Saturday) and February 23 (Sunday)—potentially resulting in a four-day shutdown of banking services. AIBOC has highlighted unresolved grievances, such as the appointment of workmen and officer directors in public sector banks and the reversal of specific directives from the Department of Financial Services (DFS). Moreover, the union is urging the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) to address pending issues.

The proposed strike threatens to disrupt essential banking operations, including cash deposits, withdrawals, and loan approvals, leaving millions of customers in need of advanced planning to avoid inconvenience. The AIBOC has also hinted at escalating agitation if their demands remain unmet.

Though the focus is on public sector banks, it remains unclear whether private banks will participate in the strike. Notices regarding the strike will be issued shortly, with preparations for the agitation already in full swing. As the banking industry braces for potential challenges, stakeholders are urged to stay updated and prepare for limited access to services during this period.
