Sweden’s Deadliest School Shooting: 10 Killed in Orebro Attack

Suspected Gunman Among the Dead as Sweden Faces Unprecedented Tragedy

A tragic mass shooting at Campus Risbergska, an educational institution in Orebro, has left around 10 people dead, including the suspected shooter, in what Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has described as the deadliest mass shooting in Sweden’s history. The incident, which took place on Tuesday, initially left authorities uncertain about the number of casualties, with reports first mentioning only injuries before the scale of the tragedy became clear.

According to Orebro police chief Roberto Eid Forest, the attacker is believed to have acted alone, but the exact motive remains unknown. Authorities have not disclosed the identities or ages of the victims, leaving it unclear whether they were students, teachers, or staff. Some reports suggest the gunman took his own life, but police have yet to confirm this detail.

Eyewitnesses recalled the horror as gunshots echoed through the school hallways. Teachers Miriam Jarlevall and Patrik Soderman described the terrifying moments when students ran in, warning of an active shooter. They hid in their offices as the sounds of gunfire filled the building. Witnesses outside saw bodies on the ground, surrounded by blood, while panic spread among students, parents, and staff.

Police responded swiftly, securing the premises and launching an investigation. Reports indicate the suspect, believed to be a 35-year-old with no prior criminal record but a legal firearm license, may have used an automatic weapon and deployed smoke-generating equipment inside the school. Authorities also conducted a search of the suspect’s residence.

The incident has sent shockwaves across Sweden, a country that has recently faced increasing gun violence, though school shootings remain rare. Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf expressed deep sorrow over the attack, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the violence, stating that schools should never be sites of terror.

Many students in nearby schools were locked inside for safety during the police operation, leaving parents anxiously waiting for their release. A mother, whose child was in one of the secured schools, voiced her shock and anger, saying such tragedies should never happen.

While Sweden has previously witnessed school stabbings and other violent incidents, this shooting marks an unprecedented level of devastation. Authorities continue their investigation, seeking answers to how and why such a tragedy unfolded in Orebro.
