Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is expected to witness heavy rainfall over the next four days, according to the latest weather forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD has predicted widespread heavy rain and thunderstorms across the state, with these weather conditions expected to persist until September 4. This forecast comes as part of the ongoing monsoon season, which has already brought significant rainfall to various parts of the state.
In response to the forecast, a yellow alert has been issued for five districts—Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod—for Sunday. A yellow alert is a cautionary notice that indicates the possibility of heavy rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. The alert serves as a warning for residents and local authorities to be prepared for potential disruptions due to the weather.
The IMD has further extended the yellow alert to additional districts over the coming days:
September 2: Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
September 3: Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
September 4: Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
Alongside the heavy rainfall, squally weather is expected along the Kerala coast, with wind speeds ranging from 35 to 45 km/h, and gusts reaching up to 55 km/h. These conditions are expected to create rough sea conditions, prompting authorities to issue a warning to fishermen, advising them to avoid venturing out to sea during this period.
The combination of heavy rain and strong winds could potentially lead to localized flooding, landslides in hilly areas, and disruptions to daily life, especially in the districts under yellow alert. Residents are advised to stay informed through official channels and to take necessary precautions, particularly in vulnerable areas.
