The Union Cabinet has approved a new Income Tax Bill aimed at simplifying India’s tax structure and replacing the Income Tax Act of 1961. This long-awaited reform seeks to create a more transparent, modern, and taxpayer-friendly system without introducing any new taxes.
According to official sources, the revised tax law will be significantly shorter, reducing the legal jargon, complexities, and lengthy provisions that have made compliance difficult for taxpayers. The new framework will ensure that tax laws are easier to understand and implement, helping individuals and businesses adhere to regulations with minimal confusion.
“The goal is to simplify the legal provisions so that taxpayers can easily comply,” stated the Finance Secretary on Thursday.
One of the most notable features of the new tax legislation is its conciseness—the bill is expected to be 50% shorter than the current Income Tax Act. It will include clearer language, fewer provisos, and simplified interpretations, making it easier for both taxpayers and tax professionals to navigate.
Additionally, the new bill aims to reduce litigation by streamlining the dispute resolution process. Taxpayers often face prolonged legal battles over technicalities, and the revised law will introduce more efficient mechanisms to handle tax disputes, ensuring faster resolutions.
Another pro-taxpayer measure under the new legislation includes the possibility of reduced penalties for certain tax-related offences. This initiative is expected to create a more balanced tax system that encourages voluntary compliance while being less punitive for minor infractions.
By focusing on clarity, accessibility, and ease of compliance, the government is striving to establish a modern tax regime that benefits both individuals and businesses. The bill is expected to boost confidence among taxpayers by reducing bureaucratic hurdles and making the tax process more transparent.
With this major tax reform, the government reaffirms its commitment to creating a pro-business, growth-oriented tax system while ensuring fair and efficient tax collection.
