The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has imposed a fine of Rs 20 lakh on IndiGo for purported lapses related to pilot training at Category C aerodromes. The airline’s parent company, InterGlobe Aviation, disclosed this development in a filing to the stock exchanges on Wednesday.
The regulatory body’s communication, dated September 26, flagged IndiGo for allegedly failing to employ qualified simulators during pilot training, a mandatory requirement under aviation safety norms. In its official response, IndiGo stated that it is contesting the DGCA’s directive through the appropriate appellate forum.
The company reassured investors and stakeholders that the imposed penalty would not significantly affect its financial health or operational capabilities. “The Company is in the process of contesting this Order before the appropriate appellate authority. There is no material impact on financials, operations or other activities of the Company,” the filing noted.
The airline also explained the delay in publicly sharing details of the order, attributing it to a lag in internal communications rather than any intentional withholding. Earlier this year, an IndiGo flight bound for Delhi had to abort take-off at Lucknow airport due to a technical fault.
The incident involved flight 6E2111, which was carrying over 150 passengers, including Samajwadi Party leader and Lok Sabha MP Dimple Yadav, according to IndiGo’s official Statement. This episode highlights the continued scrutiny of safety practices by both regulators and the public, emphasising the critical importance of strict adherence to training protocols and equipment standards.
