Bhubaneswar: Odisha is on the brink of a mining revolution after extensive gold reserves were discovered across multiple districts, positioning the state as a potential gold mining hub. Mines Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena confirmed these significant findings in the Odisha Legislative Assembly, emphasizing their economic potential and the state’s growing mineral wealth.
According to reports from Odisha TV, gold deposits have been identified in Sundargarh, Nabarangpur, Angul, and Koraput. Additionally, preliminary surveys indicate the presence of gold mines in Malkangiri, Sambalpur, and Boudh. These discoveries reinforce Odisha’s reputation as a mineral-rich state and enhance its contribution to India’s gold production.
Further exploration is underway in Mayurbhanj, particularly in areas such as Jashipur, Suriaguda, Ruaansi, Idelkucha, Maredihi, Suleipat, and Badampahad. Geological surveys have also confirmed gold deposits in the Adasa-Rampalli area of Deogarh, initially explored for copper by the Geological Survey of India (GSI). In Keonjhar, gold exploration activities are ongoing in Gopur-Gazipur, Mankadchuan, Saleikana, and Dimirimunda.
Odisha’s First Gold Mine Auction
In a landmark move, Odisha is set to auction its first-ever gold mining block in Deogarh. This historic development marks a significant milestone in the state’s mining sector. The GSI and Odisha Mining Corporation are conducting further studies to assess the commercial viability of gold extraction in Keonjhar’s promising locations, including Mankadchuan, Saleikana, and Dimirimunda. A technical committee will review final exploration reports before proceeding with the commercialization process.
Future Exploration and Economic Impact
Preliminary surveys are actively being carried out in Mayurbhanj’s Jashipur, Suriaguda, and Badampahad regions. Meanwhile, GSI is conducting copper-gold exploration in Deogarh’s Jaladihi area, with results expected in 2025. In Keonjhar, the Gopur-Gazipur deposits are undergoing assessments to determine the gold quantity before moving toward the auction stage.
The discovery of these vast gold reserves is expected to significantly impact Odisha’s economy by attracting investments, boosting employment, and positioning the state as a key player in India’s gold mining industry. With mining auctions on the horizon and further exploration underway, Odisha could soon emerge as a major contributor to India’s gold production.
