New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra welcomed Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s decision to designate the Wayanad landslide tragedy as a “Disaster of Severe Nature.” She emphasized that this recognition would significantly contribute to the rehabilitation efforts and urged the government to allocate funds promptly for the affected communities.
Taking to social media platform X, the Wayanad MP described the Centre’s move as “a step in the right direction.” In her post, she stated, “I am glad @AmitShah ji has finally taken the decision to declare the Wayanad tragedy as a ‘Disaster of Severe Nature.’ This will greatly assist those requiring rehabilitation and is undoubtedly a positive step. We hope that adequate funds will be allocated without delay.”
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs communicated that the Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) had assessed the Meppadi landslide in Wayanad district as a disaster of “severe nature.” This classification is expected to enable the necessary support and relief measures for those affected.
The Kerala Congress shared the Centre’s decision on December 30 via its official social media accounts, attributing the outcome to persistent efforts by Priyanka Gandhi and her delegation. Earlier, on December 5, Priyanka Gandhi, along with other MPs from Kerala, met Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging immediate relief measures for those impacted by the landslide.
The Wayanad landslide, which occurred on July 30, was one of Kerala’s deadliest natural disasters, claiming over 300 lives and leaving many homeless in Mundakkai and Chooralmala areas. Priyanka Gandhi emphasized the need for the Centre’s active involvement, stating that failure to act decisively would reflect poorly on the nation’s commitment to its citizens during crises.
