Kochi: MLA Uma Thomas, who sustained severe injuries after falling from a 15-foot-high temporary stage at the Kaloor International Stadium, has shown slight signs of recovery. According to reports, she opened her eyes and moved her limbs when her son visited. However, her condition remains critical, and a detailed medical update will be provided in the bulletin at 10 am on Tuesday.
Uma Thomas suffered serious lung injuries and remains on a ventilator at Palarivattom Renai Medicity. The mishap occurred on Sunday evening during a mega Bharatanatyam event aimed at setting a Guinness World Record. The MLA fell while attempting to greet an acquaintance, losing her balance as she leaned on a ribbon attached to a weak temporary railing. She hit her head on a concrete slab during the fall and was rushed to the hospital immediately.
Following the incident, three individuals, including event organisers, have been arrested. Those in custody include Mridangam Vision CEO Shameer Abdul Raheem, Event India proprietor M T Krishnakumar, and Benny, the contractor responsible for constructing the stage. Authorities have identified serious lapses in safety protocols during the event.
An investigation by the police, Public Works Department, and Fire and Rescue Services revealed that the stage lacked proper safety guidelines and was unfit for hosting dignitaries. The stage structure, measuring 55 feet by 8 feet, had weak barriers serving as handrails, which contributed to the accident.
GCDA informed the court that the stage construction endangered lives and violated safety norms. Legal cases have been registered under multiple Sections, including IPC 125 and KAP Act 118(e). Meanwhile, the organisers, including Mridangam Vision managing director Wayanad Meppathiyil Nigosh Kumar and Oscar Event Management proprietor Thrissur Poothol P S Janish, have sought anticipatory bail, arguing that the incident was not due to negligence.
As investigations continue, officials aim to pinpoint accountability for the tragic incident, which has raised serious concerns about event safety protocols.
