According to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) “Future of Jobs” report, traditional roles such as farmworkers, delivery drivers, and food processing workers are expected to grow the most in sheer numbers. However, in terms of skill demand, tech jobs will dominate the landscape over the next five years.
The report predicts a major transition in the workforce, with 8% of current jobs—equivalent to 92 million positions—facing displacement due to factors like digitalization, demographic shifts, climate change mitigation, and geopolitical fragmentation. Despite this, the shift will create 170 million new roles globally, representing a 14% increase.
In India, specialists in Big Data, AI, ML, and cybersecurity are highly sought after, reflecting companies’ investments in cutting-edge technologies like robotics, autonomous systems, and energy solutions. India and the U.S. are leading in AI skill adoption, with corporate-sponsored training initiatives driving the surge in generative AI (GenAI) education.
Globally, analytical thinking remains the most desired skill, followed by adaptability, leadership, and social influence. Businesses are grappling with skill gaps, as 39% of current skill sets are expected to become outdated or transformed by 2030.
The report underscores the need for continuous upskilling, particularly in tech, to thrive in a rapidly evolving job market. With employers emphasizing innovation, resilience, and adaptability, professionals must embrace lifelong learning to stay competitive.
