Gurugram: In a significant breakthrough in a cyber fraud case, Gurugram police arrested a 25-year-old man from Kerala at Chennai airport while he was attempting to flee to Egypt after allegedly converting fraudulently obtained money into cryptocurrency. The accused, Ahamad Nisham, a native of Malappuram, Kerala, was intercepted by authorities on Wednesday as he tried to board an international flight.
The case came to light when a woman filed a complaint on January 31, alleging that fraudsters had posed as government officials and threatened her with imprisonment, claiming that her mobile number was linked to illegal activities. The victim, fearing legal consequences, was coerced into transferring money, which was later converted into cryptocurrency.
Several arrests had already been made in connection with the scam, and authorities had been tracking Nisham, who had been absconding. According to police reports, Nisham played a key role in laundering the defrauded money by converting it into cryptocurrency in exchange for a commission of ₹10,000.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Cyber), Priyanshu Dewan, confirmed that Nisham was apprehended before he could escape and is currently undergoing interrogation. The police are investigating whether the accused was part of a larger cybercrime syndicate involved in cryptocurrency-related scams.
The arrest underscores the increasing use of cryptocurrency in cyber fraud cases, making it harder for law enforcement agencies to track illicit financial transactions. Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious calls or messages to avoid falling prey to such scams.
