In a tragic incident, a 16-year-old Class 10 student, Mohammed Shahabas, succumbed to severe injuries sustained during a violent clash between students from two schools in Thamarassery, Kozhikode. The student, who attended MJ Higher Secondary School in Elettil, passed away around 12:30 am on Saturday at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, where he was being treated for internal bleeding.
The clash erupted on Thursday evening between students of Thamarassery Government Higher Secondary School and MJ Higher Secondary School at a local junction. The conflict reportedly stemmed from tensions arising during a farewell party at a tuition center the previous Sunday. A dance performance at the party was interrupted due to technical issues, leading to mocking and ridicule among students, which eventually escalated into violence.
After the altercation, Shahabas was dropped off at home by his friends. Although he appeared weak, there were no visible signs of injury. However, by 7 pm, he vomited and lost consciousness, prompting his family to rush him to Thamarassery Taluk Hospital. He was later referred to the Government Medical College Hospital, where he tragically passed away.
Shahabas’s relatives raised suspicions of adult involvement, citing the severity of his injuries. Meanwhile, the Thamarassery Police have taken five students from Thamarassery Government Higher Secondary School into custody. The accused will be presented before the Juvenile Justice Board, and an apprehension report will be submitted.
Shahabas, the eldest son of Palorakkunnu Iqbal and Ramseena from Chungam, near Thamarassery, leaves behind a grieving family and community, highlighting the urgent need to address youth violence and its devastating consequences.
