The Director of General Education has announced that schools in Kerala will not operate on Saturdays until a final decision is made by the Kerala High Court. This follows a recent High Court ruling that reversed an earlier directive which had designated 25 Saturdays as working days to meet the requirement of 220 school days for the 2024 academic year.
Education Minister V. Sivankutty confirmed that the government will not challenge the High Court’s decision, although an official stance on the issue is still pending. The ruling by Justice Ziyad Rahman A.A. determined that the Director of General Education did not have the authority to impose Saturdays as working days, as such decisions are considered policy matters.
