Kerala has taken a significant leap in educational and governmental technology with the introduction of KITE GNU Linux 22.04, a free and open-source software (FOSS) operating system suite. Developed by the state-run Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE), this innovative OS is set to revolutionize how technology is utilized in schools, government offices, and beyond.
KITE GNU Linux 22.04, based on the Ubuntu operating system, offers a wide range of software tools tailored to educational needs. For instance, mathematics can be explored using GeoGebra, while geography lessons are enhanced with Marble and KGeography. Animation enthusiasts can benefit from Synfig Studio, and road safety can be taught through an engaging Traffic game. Each subject area is supported by specialized software, ensuring that students receive a comprehensive and interactive learning experience.
The rollout of this OS suite marks a significant financial saving for the Department of General Education, with Rs 3,000 crore saved by avoiding the purchase of paid software licenses for two lakh computers. This cost-effective solution not only supports schools but also extends its benefits to government offices, newspaper organizations, software developers, and engineering students, who can all use the OS free of charge.
The official launch took place at the Little Kites state camp in Ernakulam, where General Education Minister V. Sivankutty inaugurated the system. KITE GNU Linux 22.04 is available for free download from the KITE website (kite.kerala.gov.in), making it accessible to anyone interested in leveraging this powerful, localised tool for education and administrative purposes.
