Significance of Onam
Onam is a major harvest festival celebrated by the Hindu Malayali community in Kerala. It is observed during the Chingam month of the Malayalam Solar Calendar, which corresponds to Simha month in some solar calendars and Avani month in the Tamil calendar. The festival marks the homecoming of King Mahabali, a legendary ruler who, according to Hindu mythology, was known for his benevolence and fairness.
Mythological Background
The story of Onam is rooted in Hindu mythology. King Mahabali, a grandson of the Brahmin sage Prahlada, had conquered the three worlds and established his rule. Despite his success, the gods felt threatened and sought the help of Lord Vishnu. Vishnu, who was fond of Mahabali for his devotion, decided to test him in his Vamana (dwarf) avatar.
Vamana asked for just three paces of land. Mahabali, intrigued but willing to grant the request, agreed. Vamana then grew in size, covering the earth and heavens in two steps, and with the third step, Mahabali offered himself. Mahabali was sent to the netherworld, but Vishnu, pleased with his devotion, granted him the boon of returning to his land once a year. Onam celebrates this annual return of King Mahabali.
Rituals and Celebrations
Pookkalam: Women create intricate floral designs called ‘pookkalam’ on the ground. These patterns, made with a variety of flowers, symbolize the festival and are intended to welcome King Mahabali.
Onam Sadya: A grand feast known as ‘onam sadya’ is prepared, featuring around 13 dishes served on banana leaves. This traditional meal includes rice, various curries, pickles, and papads.
Processions: Elephants adorned with ornaments are a notable feature of Onam processions, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Onam is not only a celebration of the harvest but also a time for family gatherings, cultural events, and joyous festivities, reflecting the rich heritage and traditions of Kerala.
