The Kuwaiti government has announced compensation of USD 15,000 (approximately Rs 12.5 lakhs) for each family of the victims of a devastating fire that resulted in 50 fatalities, including 46 Indians, in the southern Ahmadi Governorate. The fire broke out on July 12 in a seven-storey building in Mangaf city, reportedly due to an electrical short circuit in the guard’s room on the ground floor, as per Kuwaiti authorities. The building housed 196 migrant workers, predominantly from India.
In accordance with the orders of the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, each affected family will receive the compensation, as reported by the Arab Times newspaper. The funds will be processed and delivered to the victims’ respective embassies, which will ensure the timely and efficient distribution of the compensation to the families.
Among the deceased, three were Filipinos, and the identity of one victim remains unknown. The financial aid aims to support the bereaved families during this difficult period, the newspaper reported.
Additionally, Kuwait’s public prosecutor has launched an investigation to determine the causes and circumstances of the fire. Several individuals, including a Kuwaiti citizen and various foreigners, have been arrested on charges of manslaughter and negligence regarding security and safety measures.
