Lulu Group International, based in Abu Dhabi, has introduced India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI) system across all its stores in the UAE, enhancing convenience for Indian expatriates. The first transaction using UPI was conducted at Lulu Hypermarket in Abu Dhabi by A. Amarnath, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy.
Indian expatriates and visitors to the UAE can now use RuPay cards for payments at Lulu stores, along with popular UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm via QR code scanning. This new payment option is expected to significantly benefit the over 10 million Indians who visit the UAE annually.
UPI, a system that integrates multiple bank accounts into a single mobile application, was launched in Abu Dhabi last February by President Sheikh Mohammed and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Since then, UPI payment systems have also been adopted by Dubai-based Mashreq Bank and Al Maya Supermarkets.
