Dubai: The Indian Consulate in Dubai has implemented new regulations regarding the repatriation of deceased expatriates’ bodies. As per the revised rules, only a blood relative of the deceased or an individual holding a valid power of attorney is permitted to sign and cancel the necessary documents for repatriation.
Moreover, to access financial assistance from the Indian Consulate, families are required to obtain signatures from five different authorities in India, including the Panchayat Office. These changes aim to prevent agents from exploiting grieving families, as the Consulate revealed that unauthorized agents have been charging exorbitant fees, far exceeding the rates approved by the authorities.
The Consulate has assured the community of its support, stating that assistance will be provided free of charge through a panel of community associations in every emirate. Families in need can approach these associations or the Consulate directly for guidance and services.
However, social activists in the UAE have voiced concerns about the new regulations. They argue that the requirements impose an additional burden on already distressed families and limit the role of social workers, who have previously stepped in to assist families with documentation and other formalities.
While the revised rules aim to curb exploitation, their practicality and impact on grieving families remain points of debate within the expatriate community.
