An eight-month-old child in Bengaluru has tested positive for Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) following a surge in cases in China. The child, who is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in the city, has no history of international travel. The Karnataka Health Department confirmed the case and notified the Union Health Ministry. It remains unclear if the strain in Bengaluru is the same as the one causing a rise in infections in China.
The Karnataka Health Minister has called for an urgent meeting with Health Ministry officials regarding the situation. While China has downplayed the surge in HMPV cases, describing it as a seasonal occurrence, it has acknowledged the increase in cases and attributed it to the winter season. Chinese authorities assured the public that it is still safe to travel within the country.
India’s National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has been monitoring the rise in respiratory and influenza cases, staying in contact with global health bodies. Dr. Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services, clarified that HMPV, like common cold viruses, can cause flu-like symptoms, particularly in the young and elderly. He advised the public to follow general health precautions, such as avoiding contact with others if exhibiting symptoms, practicing respiratory hygiene, and taking appropriate medication for cold and fever.
