External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar raised a strong caution about the potential risks of artificial intelligence (AI), comparing its future impact to that of nuclear weapons. Speaking at the Kautilya Economic Conclave, organised by the Institute of Economic Growth and the Finance Ministry, he described AI as a major force that will reshape the global landscape in ways we may not yet fully comprehend.
Jaishankar emphasized that AI, while offering tremendous technological advancements, also carries significant risks. He remarked, “AI could be as dangerous for the world as nuclear bombs once were,” indicating that the technology could pose profound challenges to international stability. He stressed the need for countries to be prepared to manage the far-reaching consequences of AI.
The Minister also touched on the changing dynamics of globalisation, highlighting how it could become weaponised in the coming decade, contributing to job losses and socio-political unrest. According to Jaishankar, the tension between globalisation and protectionism is growing, with many nations attributing economic and employment challenges to the forces of globalisation.
In addition, Jaishankar critiqued the United Nations, comparing the institution to an outdated business model that is failing to adapt to modern global realities. He suggested that the UN, which once played a key role in international affairs, now largely functions as a passive observer, no longer responsive to today’s challenges.
On the subject of current geopolitical tensions, Jaishankar pointed to the Middle East as a key area of conflict over economic corridors and resources. He warned that future conflicts could increasingly revolve around climate change, especially impacting the Global South, which already bears the brunt of such geopolitical disruptions. The Minister urged global leaders to take note of these shifting dynamics and prepare for emerging challenges on the world stage.
