The Indian government has sanctioned Rs 944.80 crore to Tamil Nadu to support relief and recovery efforts following the devastation caused by Cyclone Fengal. This financial aid, released under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), comes as a double instalment to assist the state in addressing the hardships faced by its people. The Union Home Ministry approved the allocation, emphasizing its commitment to helping disaster-affected states under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
The funds aim to provide immediate relief for those impacted by the cyclone on November 30. An Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) will soon visit Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to conduct an on-the-ground assessment of the damage. Based on their reports, additional financial assistance from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) may be sanctioned, adhering to standard protocols.
In 2024, the central government has released over Rs 21,718.72 crore for disaster mitigation across 28 states. This includes Rs 14,878.40 crore from SDRF, Rs 4,808.32 crore from NDRF, Rs 1,385.45 crore from the State Disaster Mitigation Fund (SDMF), and Rs 646.55 crore from the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF).
Beyond monetary aid, logistical support has been crucial, with the deployment of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, Army personnel, and Air Force assistance to ensure rapid relief and recovery. Tamil Nadu’s allocation reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to mitigating the effects of natural disasters nationwide.
