In response to heavy rainfall and an impending cyclone, authorities in Tamil Nadu have declared holidays for schools and colleges on Wednesday, November 27. Educational institutions in districts including Chennai, Thiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Puducherry, Karaikal, Thiruvarur, and Nagapattinam will remain closed to ensure public safety.
Chief Minister M K Stalin convened a high-level meeting with key officials, including Revenue Minister K K S S R Ramachandran and Chief Secretary N Muruganandam, to assess the state’s preparedness for the adverse weather conditions. Relief camps have been established, and medical teams are equipped to handle emergencies. In Nagapattinam, authorities have mobilized boats, earthmovers, and generators for immediate deployment, while similar preparations are underway in Cuddalore and other affected districts.
Disaster response efforts have been bolstered by deploying State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams in vulnerable areas like Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Cuddalore. Additional NDRF units are on standby in Thanjavur to address potential emergencies.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has reported that the deep depression in the Bay of Bengal is intensifying and likely to develop into a cyclonic storm by November 27. Heavy to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is forecast for districts including Chennai, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, and Villupuram through November 28. The government continues to monitor the situation, urging residents to stay alert and follow safety advisories.
