Heavy rainfall in Delhi has led to significant disruptions and tragedies. In the Ghazipur area of East Delhi, a woman and her child drowned after falling into a waterlogged drain. The victims, identified as Tanuja (22) and her child Priyansh (3), were residents of Prakash Nagar Khoda Colony in Ghaziabad. Police reported receiving a distress call at 8:12 p.m. on Wednesday, and upon arrival, they found that the pair had drowned in a semi-constructed drain about 15 feet deep and 6 feet wide.
In addition to this tragic incident, a house collapsed in the Sabzi Mandi area of Delhi, prompting the dispatch of five fire tenders. However, their response was delayed due to traffic congestion. The collapse occurred at 8:57 p.m.
In response to the severe weather conditions, Delhi Education Minister Atishi announced that all schools, both government and private, will be closed on Thursday. This decision was made in light of the heavy rainfall and the forecast for continued bad weather.
The city’s flight operations were also impacted, with 10 flights being diverted between 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Waterlogging was reported near AIIMS, and traffic jams were observed in the ITO area.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning about the potential for slippery roads, low visibility, traffic disruptions, and localized waterlogging in low-lying areas. The IMD forecasts intermittent showers in Delhi until August 5.
